If you were to ask Japanese parents what they hoped their children would get out of the preschool experience, what might they say? Would you expect their response to be different from that of American parents? Explain.
What will be an ideal response?
Japanese parents hope that their children will learn how to get along with others and be a good group member. They would expect this to be done via play. In contrast, American parents hope that their children will learn the academic skills that will make them ready for success in school. What these groups see as goals of preschool reflect cultural values of collectivism versus individualism.
