Explain the four parenting styles identified by Diana Baumrind, and provide an example of each.
What will be an ideal response?
- Authoritarian parents are controlling, punitive, rigid, and cold. They value unquestioning obedience from their children. Comments such as "Because I told you so!" or "I'll give you something to cry about!" would be characteristic of parents practicing this style.
- Permissive parents provide lax and inconsistent feedback, and expect little of their children.
- Carlos was told to "do what he can" in school, but was neither rewarded nor punished for good nor bad grades.
- Authoritative parents are firm and set clear and consistent limits, but also are loving and emotionally supportive. Casey's father always takes the time to explain to her why her actions might be detrimental to others, and to praise her for her patience, kindness, and accomplishments.
- Uninvolved parents show little interest in their children and are emotionally detached. When Sherri dates older boys and stays out all night, her mother seems indifferent to this behavior or its consequences.
