Describe why plastic must be cleaned with both isopropyl alcohol and wax and grease remover.

The first step when preparing a plastic part for repair (and in fact, for refinishing also) is cleaning. It is a three step method: soap and water; isopropyl alcohol; and wax and grease remover. Plastic bumpers are manufactured using a mold release agent, which helps when removing the part from the die. This release agent is injected into the mold as a pellet mixed with the plastic pellets during manufacturing, and will continue to sweat out long after manufacturing. Because of this, plastic parts must be washed with soap and hot water to dissolve any water contamination, even if the bumper being repaired is older. These parts should be washed both inside and out. After they are dry (by forcing with air or another method), they should be washed with an isopropyl alcohol. The alcohol will act as an antistatic agent and will remove any remaining contaminants that are not water-soluble. The third step is to clean with a mild wax and grease remover, which ensures the final removal of any remaining substance. Strong solvents used on open raw plastic may cause swelling and could contaminate the repair area. To avoid such contamination, the technician should never clean plastic with lacquer thinner or strong reducers.
