Discuss the difference between ‘transformational’ and ‘transactional’ leadership. Which style of leadership is best, and why?

What will be an ideal response?

The model answer will define both transformational and transactional leadership. It will emphasize the major difference between the two (i.e. transactional being centered on schedules, tasks, reward for performance; transformational being centered on inspiring, visioning and change). The bright student should realize there is no right or wrong style but that the effectiveness of the style depends upon the situation. A superior answer will spell out under what conditions each style might be most effective. Some students may favour one style over the other. In such cases the quality of the answer will depend on how well the student backs up and justifies his/her response.
