Why must a writer be careful when rejecting a person's idea or proposal?

Rejecting an idea requires great care because the person probably spent a considerable amount of time and energy developing and describing the idea. The person may have studied the feasibility of the idea and conducted research before presenting it. Because the reader went to great effort, he or she is assuming that the proposed idea is worthy and is expecting a positive response. The writer must handle the rejection carefully to avoid personalizing the negative response.
