When should students use the dictionary?

What will be an ideal response?

Avoid having students look up all the hard words that they encounter in their reading. They should use context and morphemic and syllabic analysis during their reading. Stopping to look up a word, unless it is critical to an understanding of the selection, interrupts the reading. Looking up a word afterward to check to see if correct meaning has been derived from context or morphemic analysis or simply to get the meanings of words that could not be figured out is a useful activity.
