1. Introduction and introductory activities: A basic description of the project, and a series of simple actives intended to have each subject disclose a little something about himself or herself. This will establish rapport and comfort among participants.
2. Statement of the basic rules or guidelines for the interview: Explain that you expect an open, polite, and orderly environment where everyone in the group will be encouraged to participate. Explain the procedure, and how questions should be responded to (e.g., in round, or a toss up to the group). The moderator should explain that people are expected to have different opinions, and you want to hear all of them. If the session is being recorded, you should explain why.
3. Short question-and-answer discussions: Questions should be written out and listed with intentional probes included to facilitate more information in the event that there is little discussion after asking the initial questions. Moderators should deviate from the schedule as dynamics of the group begin to form the group experience.
4. Special activities or exercises: Some focus groups, especially those involving children, can use role playing or drawing to help subjects better express their views. Activities can allow the moderator to determine what individual subjects know or believe without the influence of others in the group. One strategy is to have subjects fill out a pencil and paper survey before the question-and-answer/discussion segment. This allows subjects to think about and perhaps commit to certain ideas and attitudes about topics to be discussed during the group session.
