How can interprofessional teams work more productively for the benefit of clients? In your experiences, what appear to be the strongest obstacles toward that end?

What will be an ideal response?

Productive teamwork requires that the members respect each other’s domains of expertise and attempt to share influence in the best interests of the client, so that all points of view are heard and respected during the assessment. When problems in teamwork occur, they are usually related to any of the factors listed below:

• Professional staff often maintain rigid boundaries between themselves and members of other professions
• Professionals tend to assert that the problems relating to their specialty should be kept within their domain
• Members of different professions occupy different levels of power in the organizational hierarchy
• The social worker’s ability to successfully coordinate interventions for clients requires an ability to manage these boundaries
