The victims' rights movement grew out of the dissatisfaction of victims with the passive role, neglect, and minimization of harm they suffered. Explain the costs and effects of victimization and what many victims go through
What will be an ideal response?
Victimization results in financial, physical, and psychological harm to the victim. The financial costs are easiest to calculate, and often the victim will suffer longtime physical and psychological harm. Insurance may replace the property lost or destroyed in a burglary, but the feeling of vulnerability and fear may last a lifetime. Sexual assault victims may suffer the pain of
the attack, the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy, a feeling of social shame, and the dissolution of their marriage. It is impossible to calculate the costs of these harms. Victims of violent assault may suffer lifelong injuries or incapacitation due to injuries suffered in their attack. Many victims suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which manifests itself in numerous psychological symptoms. Families who have lost loved ones due to victimization may suffer a lifetime of grief, anger, and PTSD.
