Police tradition from the history of policing has had a profound effect on police culture and police procedures, from Sherlock Holmes to cyber crime. Historically, police detectives have had and continue to have high status among the rank and file police officer and the public. The role of paid informants has provided some of the most reliable information in an investigation for many decades. Historically, the investigation division has been separated from line officers and middle management involved with line officers. Whenever anyone tried to breach this historical and status division, as in team policing, the policy has failed. With the advent of cybercrime, global drug and organized crime and global terrorism in larger departments, there are many more specialists that also create barriers between the line officer and the investigative unit.
