Edema is the accumulation of excess interstitial fluid. It can occur for a variety of reasons that interfere with normal bulk flow. Causes of edema include: a reduced concentration of plasma proteins, which lowers plasma colloid osmotic pressure; increased permeability of capillary walls, which allows proteins to pass out of the blood and accumulate in the interstitial fluid, thereby increasing interstitial colloid osmotic pressure; increased venous pressure, which increases the backflow of blood into capillary beds increasing capillary pressure and forcing more fluid into the interstitial space; and blockage of the lymphatic system, which causes the excess fluid to remain in the interstitial space.
