Animal assisted therapy promote contact between an otherwise socially isolated person and the animal. As a nonverbal method of intervention pet therapy seems to reach people at all stages of dementia. Individuals showed more verbalizations, affective responses and more appropriate touching. Observers of people with dementia report the individuals show less agitation, experience better sleep, reduce the need for tactile stimulation, and lower the level of depression.
