What changes in immigration, farming, and technology did World War II bring to the

United States? How did those changes impact our K-12 schools?

What will be an ideal response?

With the end of World War II, immigrants were no longer coming from primarily Judeo-Christian, European countries. They were bringing their own cultural and religious beliefs together with memories of traumatic experiences. As farming became mechanized, small farmers were forced out of business, and fewer farmers' children wanted to remain on the farm. Immigrants, farmers and others started looking for a better life in the cities. People became mobile, not staying in one place long enough to know their neighbors. Communication systems improved, and people became aware of changes and trends in other states and cities across the country. States enacted compulsory attendance laws, and parents realized that the only way their children could get jobs and improve their lives was by completing high school. The United States took center stage in world affairs. Schools were pressured to revise and expand the curriculum to ensure that the United States was the leader in everything from military armaments to space travel to industrial output. The result of a changing world, the informal, neighborly relationship between parents and schools changed to a formal, legal relationship.
