Briefly explain what intimate partner violence is and how it affects someone in a relationship.

What will be an ideal response?

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is "a serious, preventable public health problem that affects millions of Americans" (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012b). It includes physical, sexual, and psychological/emotional harm, or the threat of such harm, by a current or former partner or spouse, and it occurs among both heterosexual and same-sex couples. IPV varies in frequency and severity and ranges from one blow to chronic, severe battering. Men and women are violent at nearly equal rates, but men make up the majority (87%) of offenders who come to the attention of the police (Melton & Sillito, 2012).
