Explain LGBTQ family formation.
What will be an ideal response?
Historically, LGBTQ people were forced to live in secretive ways that did not allow them to love each other or even to treat other gay men or lesbian women with dignity, respect, or equality. In fact, until sometime in the 1960s, gay men felt that they could only love or have sex with heterosexual men, not other gay men, and the same was true for lesbian women. Today, it is possible to find love and to create family with other LGBTQ people. Forming their own family is now considered an act of sexual orientation expression for many people in the world.
A family of choice is composed of intimate partners or spouses, close friends, and neighbors and other loved ones who feel so close to each other that they celebrate holidays and birthdays together as if they were a biological family.
Like other positive changes regarding LGBTQ people, the concept of family of choice draws attention to the many creative forms of family occurring within our society. This includes families headed by lesbian mothers or by gay fathers and includes adopted children or biological children.
