Discuss the automobile exception and how if differs from entering a residence in terms of probable cause

What will be an ideal response?

The automobile or motor vehicle exception (or the Carroll rule, or probable cause rule) authorizes a law enforcement officer who has probable cause to believe that a vehicle contains evidence of a crime to search the vehicle and to seize the evidence. Probable cause alone will not get a law enforcement officer into a home to make an arrest or a search for evidence. However, probable cause alone will authorize entry into a vehicle to seize evidence. The scope of the search of a vehicle is limited by the nature of the probable cause that justified the search. If the search is for a small item, such as a small amount of illegal drugs, the entire vehicle can be searched. If the search is for a large item, like a stolen lawn mower or a large bicycle, only parts of the vehicle where such an item could be located may be searched.
