What is the difference between a solar and lunar day? Which is longer? Why?

· A lunar day is the time elapsed for the moon to orbit from the highest point in the sky to the next time it is at that point.
· A solar day corresponds with the rotation of the Earth. With each solar day, the moons position moves 12.2° in the sky.
· The lunar day is longer than the solar day. It is approximately 24 hours and 50 minutes. This is because the Earth must rotate an additional 12.2° to place the moon at the same point in the sky. This additional rotation equates to 50 minutes of time.
· Solar days are a consistent 24 hour period.
