Why is Vézelay most closely associated with the Crusades?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Urban II intended to preach the launching of the First Crusade here in 1095; in 1147, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux called for the Second Crusade here as well. King Louis VII of France took up the cross here, and in 1190 Richard the Lionhearted of England and Philip Augustus of France set out for the Third Crusade from Vézelay.
