Research methods of transitioning from IP version 4 (32 bits) to IP version 6 (128 bits) and provide an overview. Do the computers and networking devices in your school network support IPv6?

What will be an ideal response?

Most modern operating systems support Ipv6. However, transition
mechanisms are required because IPv6 and IPv4 for are incompatible. Any
growth in IPv6 deployment will result in legacy IPv4 systems that must still
“talk” to IPv6 hosts. In particular, we need to enable IPv6-only hosts to reach
IPv4 services and to allow isolated IPv6 hosts and networks to reach the
IPv6 Internet over the existing IPv4 infrastructure. The related Request for
Comments (RFCs) are RFC 2893 (Transition Mechanisms for IPv6 Hosts and
Routers) and RFC2185 (Routing Aspects of IPv6 Transition), which defi ne
compatibility and transition mechanisms. Transition mechanisms include
the following:

• Dual-stack IP implementation involves interoperating hosts and

routers. Each has a dual stack, which supports IPv4 and IPv6.

• Embedding IPv4 addresses in IPv6 addresses involves establishing a

mapping between IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. With our earlier address

(89.19.141.186), the Ipv6 version would be 0:0:0:0:0:0: 89.19.141.186,

which can be shortened to: 89.19.141.186.

• IPv6-over-IPv4 tunneling mechanisms establish an encapsulated

IPv6 packets within an IPv4 tunnel.

• IPv4/IPv6 header translation, whereby we use a proxy server to

translate hosts with IPv6-only connectivity, so they may access

existing IPv4-only resources.
