Historically connected to political parties—the People's National Party (PNP) or the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), these parties employed them to attack opponents. When they became estranged from the parties, many fled to the US. Their violence is "over the top," even among gangsters. Examples include boiling people alive, raping females in front of family members to collect debts, and engaging in frenzied shootouts, called "showering.". Their excessive violence has made them vulnerable to law enforcement, as it undermines the loyalty of posse members.
