Two HPV vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, are available to prevent cervical cancer and other diseases caused by HPV. Both vaccines protect against HPV types 16 and 18, which cause most cervical cancers. Additionally, Gardasil protects against HPV types 6 and 11 and most genital warts. Gardasil 9 has been approved by the FDA to protect against an additional five strains of HPV. Studies have shown Gardasil 9 to be up to 97 percent effective against those added HPV strains, which are associated with 20 percent of cervical cancers. The HPV vaccines have surpassed all expectations in terms of disease prevention and are considered “anti-cancer” vaccines. Since the introduction of the vaccines in 2006, vaccine-type HPV prevalence has decreased by 56 percent among female teenagers aged 14–19 years. |
