Wheel networks are communication arrangements that require a gatekeeper, such as a manager, who takes on the role as the collector and transmitter of information. The gatekeeper is someone in the group who has the power to control the communication access between members and to regulate the content and delivery of specific messages.
All-channel networks are arrangements in which communication is open between and among all members; they can communicate actively with each other (e.g., a forensic team in a lab). This type of network is decentralized (no leader regulating communication flow), with lower power distance. If the group is large, this type of network might travel or a mediated channel.
Chain networks are communication arrangements where members interact with the persons above and below them in rank. For example, a company might have a chain where a vice president interacts with directors, directors, interact with managers, managers interact with assistant managers, and assistant managers interact with technicians. This upward and downward flow follows the group's hierarchy and helps maintain power structures. This network can be unreliable as it travels through different individual interpretations.
