An electrolyte is a substance that dissociates into ions when placed in water, whereas a nonelectrolyte is a substance that generally has covalent bonds that do not dissociate into charged particles in water. Electrolytes are named for the fact that the resulting charged particles conduct electricity in a solution of water.
