Compare and contrast cratons and mobile belts. What types of rocks are they composed of and

what are the relative ages of these rocks? Provide specific examples of cratons and mobile belts. What will be an ideal response?

The student should recognize that cratons are relatively stable and immobile cores of continents
and commonly are composed of a crystalline Precambrian shield surrounded by a platform
covered by Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks. Mobile belts, in contrast, are elongated areas of
mountain building that are located along the margins of continents and have recent marine
sedimentary rocks that are deformed and intruded by igneous rocks.
