What could cause strain softening and strain hardening in a deforming rock?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Strain softening is promoted by growth of platy minerals, reduction in grain size, increased fluid pressure, recrystallization into newer and weaker minerals and an increase in temperature. Strain hardening may be caused by accumulation of dislocations, cementation, geometric interlocking of grains or structures and much more.
