Discuss the importance of discretion and provide an example of how the police would use discretion when dealing with juveniles.

What will be an ideal response?

Police are allowed some discretion when dealing with juveniles. Since an arrest by an officer will likely label a youth as a delinquent, much of the time officers simply warn juveniles who are loitering or involved in a brief physical altercation, and ask them to leave the area. However, certain juvenile behaviors require police intervention. Police officers have to consider the seriousness of any offense before deciding on how to proceed with an official intervention. Nonviolent and less serious offenses can often be handled informally.
