In addition to there being an increasing number of fatherless children in this nation, which can lead to greater amounts of crime, certainly the influence of immigration to America and the growth of minority group populations is affecting U.S. society and policing, as well. Police must understand their customs and overcome language barriers. This is also an aging society – America is a "graying" country. While the elderly are less likely than younger people to become victims of violence and are less likely to be injured during a violent crime, when they are injured, their injuries are more severe and their victimization can be permanently disabling. Being on fixed income, they cannot receive the best medical care; most are female. They also have a high fear of crime.
