What is the difference between first gear and reverse?
What will be an ideal response?
In first or low gear, the synchro sleeve in the rear of the transmission is moved toward the rear to engage the first-gear clutch teeth. This attaches first gear to the output shaft.
In reverse, both synchro sleeves are in the neutral position. The reverse idler gear slides into mesh between the spur gear on the outside of the rear synchro sleeve and the reverse gear on the countershaft. The hub inside of the synchro sleeve is splined to the mainshaft. The idler gear changes the direction of normal gear rotation to provide output rotation in reverse.
