How does SSH port forwarding work?

What will be an ideal response?

A TCP/IP connection to an external application that is not secure can be redirected to the SSH program (either the SSH client or server), which then forwards it to the other SSH party (server or client). This party forwards the connection to the desired destination host. The forwarded connection is encrypted and protected on the path between the SSH client and server. For example, most e-mail programs use the unencrypted POP3 protocol to connect to a mailserver that is using TCP/IP port 110. If the client device can first connect via SSH to the mailserver and the SSH session can be configured to "forward" port 110 through the encrypted SSH link, the local e-mail client can access port 110 on the local computer and will be connecting to the remote mailserver while the incoming e-mail will be sent over the encrypted SSH link.
