When a signal leaves an antenna, the sine waves have a particular orientation; in other words, they oscillate either horizontally or vertically. The orientation of the wave leaving the antenna is called antenna polarization. If you hold a portable cellular phone straight up in your hand, the antenna is positioned vertically. The signal leaving the antenna will be vertically polarized, meaning that the sine waves will travel up and down when leaving the antenna.
Antenna polarization is important because the most efficient signal transmission and reception is experienced when the sending and receiving antennas are equally polarized-that is, they are both either vertically or horizontally polarized.
