Explain why the external equalizer line on a thermostatic expansion valve should always be installed after (downstream of) the thermal bulb.

What will be an ideal response?

The thermal bulb should always be installed as close to the evaporator outlet as possible, so the external equalizer line should be installed after the thermal bulb. If the thermostatic expansion valve was to develop an internal leak, some high-pressure, high-temperature subcooled liquid would bypass the valve, flash into a cold vapor, and enter the external equalizer line. If the thermal bulb was installed after the external equalizer line, the temperature that the thermal bulb was sensing would be higher, causing the TXV to open.
