A manufacturing company purports to uphold the organizational value of "family."

What will be an ideal response?

Analyze the use of the family metaphor by this organization from a critical perspective.
Answer: A critical theorist, after extensive research in the organization, may consider this
situation to be an example of hegemony. The use of the family metaphor may be
considered a way for management to create a situation in which the workers actively
support organizational interests while working against their own. Despite the fact that
many workers may feel comforted by the family metaphor and the atmosphere created by
it, they are subtly being forced to work harder, keep longer hours, and sacrifice their own
family lives for their organizational "family." The metaphor is representative of the
behaviors and attitudes, in other words, the ideology, that management desires workers to
hold. What seems on the surface to serve the interests of the workers, in actuality serves
the interests of management and may even be oppressive to the workers.
