Describe the rationale for the text inviting teachers to reflect on their own beliefs as a first step in being a multicultural educator.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: It has been estimated that during a typical workday, a teacher makes hundreds of decisions related to the teaching and learning process. With that many decisions being made, teachers will often state that they don’t have the time to reflect or examine in depth their own belief systems. And yet teachers make these many decisions based on a particular set of beliefs, values, expectations, experiences, and life histories, and their decisions may ignore, contradict, or conflict with the beliefs, values, and life histories of students. In this light, reflective practice becomes essential.
Learning Objective: 11.5: Develop a plan for your own ongoing professional development as a multicultural educator.
