Explain how the presence of others affects performance on easy and hard tasks, and give three explanations to account for these effects

What will be an ideal response?

The presence of others facilitates performance on easy tasks and impedes
performance on hard tasks. Three mechanisms have been proposed to account for this
phenomenon, often referred to as social facilitation: (1) the mere presence theory
suggests that the mere presence of others is arousing, and it is this general arousal that
is responsible for the effects of social facilitation? (2) the evaluation apprehension
model suggests that it is the fear of being evaluated by others that is responsible for
social facilitation effects? and (3) the distraction-conflict theory suggests that other
people are distracting, and it is simply the distraction provided by their presence that
enhances performance on an easy task and impedes performance on a difficult task.
