AN OFFSET BUTT JOINT: is sometimes recommended by the manufacturer when welding a replacement rail section into place The mating surface or edge on the manufacturer's replacement part is cut at an angle across the frame web to ensure that an open offset butt joint is used when installing the replacement part. The placement of the seam is staggered on the other side of the rail so they are not directly in line or across from each other. The manufacturer further recommends that the joint not be reinforced by fish plating the back side.
