The data broker uses a virtual directory to access all identity management-related data. A virtual directory holds an abstraction pointing to and describing the characteristics of data residing in various repositories in both a data store and a system of records. Rather than replicating and containing elements in its own physical store, a virtual directory maps this abstraction into a "virtual" namespace that appears to the data broker and other components as a "real" directory. When the data broker queries the directory, reading or modifying objects, the virtual directory initiates the operations necessary to perform transparently against the original data sources. Under this approach, the data broker sees all the data as they are from a single directory. Lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) protocol is commonly used to access data in the virtual directory.
