Provide advice to teachers who wish to create a proper learning environment for students with ASD.
What will be an ideal response?
Highly structured learning environments and materials are essential for students with ASD (Carnahan et al., 2011; Iovannone, 2003). The structured environment permits a student to predict what is currently happening in the learning process and to anticipate what will occur next as well as upcoming transitions.Visual schedules to organize sequences of time, activities, and to facilitate transitions are especially helpful, as is the use of labels and arrangement of physical boundaries (Iovannone, 2003).
To create a structured environment, make sure to build visual boundaries to define the work area.Help students understand the rules and routines, schedules, and activities during the school day. When activities are clearly organized, with designated beginning and endings, we enable students to stay focused and organized (Carnahan et al., 2011).Consider color-coding, using to-do and finished boxes, binders, or folders, and checklists to help promote organization.Creating visual cues, such as helping students identify what to do when they need help, helps students know what to do.
