Define the terms failure event, reproach, and account. Then, create a hypothetical situation that exemplifies all three terms.
What will be an ideal response?
- A failure event, or a transgression, is an incident marked by the breaking or violating of a relational understanding or agreement.
* These understandings can either be implicit or explicit.
- A reproach is a message that a failure event has occurred.
* Reproaches are usually in the form of a direct statement, but can also be conveyed indirectly through hints or nonverbal messages.
- An account is the response to a reproach.
- Example:
* Failure event: Carli came home from her friend's house an hour past the curfew that her parents had established.
* Reproach: Carli's dad says, "Carli, you're late tonight. You've got some explaining to do!"
* Account: Carli replied, "Dad, I know that I'm late, and I'm sorry. I just lost track of the time."
- Student examples will vary.
