This is approached in a number of ways. The move toward worldwide computer networking
standards (discussed in Chapter 16, Introduction to Networking) for heterogeneous
computing environments is addressing this issue with the notion of a virtual file store. File
operations are mapped to an intermediate form used by all systems and then converted back
at the destination system.A logical view of data is agreed to for transmission purposes and
for remote operations. The conversions required do take time, but the trade-off is easy intercommunication
across heterogeneous environments.
