How would you define “hooking up?” What are the implications of hookup culture in the United States?
What will be an ideal response?
Hooking up generally means any kind of casual sexual contact, ranging from making out to intercourse, between two people who are strangers or only casually acquainted, with no strings attached, that is, with no commitment to a future relationship. There are various implications of hook up culture in the United States, including further double standards for women. Many believe that if a woman has had too many “hookups” she is a slut and is ostracized, while most men gain status based on the number of “hookups” they have. The risks for sexually transmitted diseases and sometimes pregnancy rise with hook up culture. Hook up culture may have both positive and negative consequences for women’s view of sexuality and sexual experiences. Some may feel liberated and learn more about their own desires and pleasures through hooking up. Some women may feel a sense of being used, pressured, or ambiguous about hooking up depending on their experiences and values regarding sex.
