What is the difference between network attached storage and a storage area network?

A network attached storage (NAS) device can be connected to a network and provide storage for any device that is connected to the network so that individual files and folders can be stored there. A storage area network (SAN) is actually a dedicated storage network that provides access to network file servers so that the devices appear like locally attached devices to the network operating system. A SAN is typically not directly accessible to devices connected to the LAN.
