the retina, the optic nerve, the retinal veins and arteries, and the vitreous humor, which is
the jellylike substance in the eye. The instrument has an angled mirror, various lenses, and a light source. An ophthalmoscope is used to detect changes in the inside of the eye due to diseases, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, optic nerve tumors, and other diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, and pressure on the brain.
