Give two reasons why college education should be required for police candidates and two reasons why college education need not be a requirement for entry level officers

What will be an ideal response?

To begin, the discussion could start with how one defines college education. Many departments are moving to a 60 credit hour requirement which is on the associate degree level. A bachelor's degree generally requires 120-124 credit hours depending on the program.

For the question, studies have found that college graduates have better communication skills (oral and written) and that they are able to develop empathy and tolerance for people with different lifestyles. There are also valid arguments made on how college graduates have better decision-making skills and are able to cope with stress.

On the other hand, some argue that the "value" of education is eroded by the police subculture and seeing people at their worst. Added to this, many argue that police work is mainly based upon common sense and even with a degree, many graduates do not have great writing skills.
