?Directive and behaviorally oriented approaches (e.g., reality therapy and cognitive-behavioral approaches) might best be used for clients operating at Level 1, and perhaps for some of the problems associated with Level 2. These are clients for whom organizing thought as it influences feeling and behavior, and seeing how their behaviors clearly affect the consequences that follow, are typically critical learning tasks.
?At Level 2, where clients demonstrate an ability to act more responsibly and can process information in a more sophisticated fashion, less counselor-active and more nondirective approaches (e.g., Gestalt or client-centered counseling) might help them find their own solutions to problems or access and express feelings.
?For Level 3 clients, such as ourselves when we avail ourselves of counseling services, the insight-oriented therapies will most likely be solid choices for use. Existential approaches, varieties of analytic approaches, or spiritually oriented theoretical stances may provide the help we need.
