What is home health care and why is this type of care on the upswing?

Home health care encompasses the provision of equipment and services to patients in the home to restore or maintain comfort, function, and health. With hospitals discharging patients sooner, this type of care has become a major industry. Advances in technology have made it possible for treatments once administered only in hospitals—such as kidney dialysis, chemotherapy, and traction—to be performed at home at 10 to 40 percent of the cost of providing these treatments in a hospital.
