How are oppressive systems enforced by visible physical markers?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers may vary but students must discuss that certain oppressed groups in society cannot physically hide their status--for example, an African American woman cannot hide the fact that she is considered a minority because these are two traits that are visible. An LGBT woman may be able to hide the fact that she is not heterosexual, but she still cannot easily hide the fact that she is a woman. Dominant groups are able to identify minority groups very easily in this way, which allows them to immediately treat them in a specific manner. For example, it is not until someone learns (or assumes based on preconceived notions) that an individual identifies as LGBT that they may begin to strip them of resources, opportunities, and respect.
