What are two of Sternberg’s theories of love? How are they complementary?
What will be an ideal response?
In his triangular theory of love, Sternberg claims that love consists of three components: intimacy, passion, and decision/commitment. These components are variable across relationships and time, and their presence defines the type of relationship. In this theory, Sternberg is focused on a structural approach to love and how it can explain some typical variations in relationships. He also describes concordance between the triangles perceived or expected by two sides in the relationship and its importance for relationship satisfaction. The theory of love as a story is more focused on what people’s conceptions of love are and how they influence their expectations. Here, Sternberg explains the
compatibility between people that emerges from these conceptions of love and names typical stories that people want to fulfill. Their stories represent love ideals, stemming from observation of real-life and fantasized relationships. Therefore, while triangular theory describes love in general, what its components are, and how they vary, love as a story describes people’s conceptions and what they seek.
These two theories can help explain how structural components of love develop—why some people develop higher or lower levels of these components and their variability. The triangular theory is focused on an ideal while the theory of love as a story provides more specific taxonomy.
