According to Vygotsky's theory, the following three concepts that can be applied to academic instruction are:
1.  Guided participation (also known as an apprenticeship in thinking) is a form of sensitive teaching in which the partner is attuned to the needs of the child and helps him or her to accomplish more than the child could do alone.
2.  Scaffolding, which is related to guided participation, permits the child to bridge the gap between his or her current competence level and the task at hand.
3.  The zone of proximal development is the gap between the child's competence level, what he can do alone, and what he can do with assistance.
