What explanations might there be for Miss Brill’s thinking, in the last lineof the story, that she “heard something crying”?
What will be an ideal response?
- Miss Brill, who loves her fur as if it were a living pet or companion, is probably capable of thinking it was that “little rogue” she heard crying over the cruelty of the young couple in the park. It’s possible, too, for the reader to believe that Miss Brill actually does hear a sound and that the “something crying” is herself. Perhaps she has, as Eudora Welty surmises in “The Reading and Writing of Short Stories,” suffered a defeat that “one feels sure . . . is forever” (Atlantic Monthly, Feb.–Mar. 1949).
