The physician increases A.N.'s IV rate and orders a new set of lab work. Compare A.N.'s

current laboratory results with those from admission.

What will be an ideal response?

• The rise in Hct levels is the result of large fluid shifts and vascular dehydration.
• The potassium level is rising. Hyperkalemia is common during the first 24 to 48 hours after burn
injury; potassium increases because of cell death and release of intracellular potassium. The
percentage of body surface area burned does not determine the magnitude of the hyperkalemia.
Significant hyperkalemia can occur with as little as 10% total body surface area burned. The
elevation can also represent the beginning of renal impairment.
• Sodium and chloride levels continue to be low because of fluid loss and the retention of sodium in
the interstitial spaces in edematous tissue.
• BUN and creatinine are elevated because of inadequate renal perfusion from hypovolemia.
• Continued hyperglycemia is present because of lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogenolysis, and
relative insulin insensitivity.
